What a question! I will answer firstly by saying that I hate nationalism - Quebec nationalism, Canadian nationalism, American nationalism, French nationalism, Kazakhstan nationalism, East Timorese nationalism… and that I think people need to learn to live together. The lesson that Western Europe has taught us is that people can overcome huge cultural and historical barriers to live together in peace.
Having said that, I think governance in Canada (parliament, elections, the federal structure) is in desperate need of democratic reform. One of the risks of opening the debate about how Canada is run is that Quebecers may decide they can do a better job of it themselves. I think it’s a debate we need to have honestly and openly.
