Multicultural Quebec gets a positive and uplifting kick in the butt

MONTREAL, February 14, 2012 - Multicultural Quebec got a positive and uplifting kick in the butt today through the official launch of Fuck Yeah Quebec, a non-profit and independent blog that covers the province’s quirkier and more cosmopolitan aspects in a positive and energizing way. Content is already live at fuckyeahquebec.com . “We’re launching today, St. Valentine’s Day, because the blog is all about why people around the world love Quebec,” said editor William Raillant-Clark. “A year’s worth of content is already up, and the international response has been great. Fuck Yeah Quebec fills a gap in the English-language blogosphere, where most media tend to be either focussed on hyper-local news or specialist topics and occasionally come across fairly angryphone.”
The blog’s name and url reflect a provocative and playful zeitgeist in social media - a series of “Fuck Yeah” blogs cover a vast range of topics from neuroscience through to Jacques Chirac’s presidency. “I did think hard about the name,” Raillant-Clark admitted. “But at the end of the day, we’re all grown ups, so why not. The biggest problem I’ve had with it has actually been with francophones, many of whom hear “Fuck you Quebec!” That’s obviously not what I’m going for at all!” Although it is mostly in English, content is translated to French on request, as anglophone bilingualism is one of the realities of life in Quebec that the blog celebrates. Similarly, the blog occasionally offers content translated from French, as the wider public is encouraged to contribute and articles are occasionally sourced from Tumblr, Reddit, Facebook and Posterous.
Tumblr’s platform has provided an important role as it is particularly suited to multimedia and collaboration. “I didn’t want a stuffy blog with paragraph upon paragraph of text - I wanted the look of the page to reflect Quebecers creativity and open-mindedness,” Raillant-Clark said. “I hope people will continue to send me content - pictures, youtube clips, music or even the nonsense they overhear in the street - that will help us to celebrate together what an odd bunch we really are. Email, facebook, twitter… it’s all good!”

About William Raillant-Clark William Raillant-Clark (29) and his husband Daniel, arrived from Paris at Dorval Airport four years ago. Two weeks in Montreal - one in February, the other in July - were enough to convince the couple that Canada was the right choice for their future.
