I will be vacationing in Montreal for the first time this year, which I am ecstatic about. What are your recommendations for things a first time traveler to Montreal must do? — Asked by Anonymous

Wow, what a question! First of all, you have reason to be ecstatic! You’re in for a great trip. I wish you had told us a little bit more about yourself and when you’re coming - because Montreal changes a lot each season! In any case, I think the real charm of this city is in its neighbourhoods - each one offers something different. This city is also a walking city.

On that note, what’s really cool is to spend a day walking up Boulevard Saint-Laurent, starting at the Saint-Laurent River (funny that). It’s like getting a whole disordered timeline of Montreal history and culture on one street. You’ll start in the Old Port, the French-Canadian historic heart of the city, then move through the abandoned core that is progressively being reclaimed (don’t dawdle), Chinatown, the groovy “Red Light” district that became famous during American prohibition, the Lower Plateau with it’s beautiful Victorian homes, Little Portugal, the Mile End with it’s greeks, hassidic jews and hipsters (think Williamsburg), and then Little Italy. You can take the métro back from there, or ride a bixi rental bike down the cycle paths! If you take little detours into the side streets, that should easily fill a day or two.

Does anyone else have any must-dos?
