Town of Mount Royal, as planned, 1915
Electric train operation through the Mount Royal Tunnel of the Canadian Northern Railway began in late 1918. Although the tunnel and its concrete lining were in place in 1916, the Great War was on … and electrical equipment, tracks, and terminals had to be completed. Initially 16 trains per day operated through the tunnel.
This detail from a large map of Montreal shows the CNoR Town of Mount Royal as it was planned at that point. The Canadian Northern station will be at the very centre of the ‘web’ with the north portal located where the solid line becomes dotted as it heads south to downtown Montreal. All the other railway lines shown belong to other railways.
